How to Create a New Top Level Folder ==================================== Due to Apple's security measures, in newer version of macOS, is no longer possible to create new folders at the top level of your hard drive. So a roundabout way is needed. 1. Using BBEdit or some other plain text editor -- not a word processor -- create a plain text file called "synthetic.conf". 2. Use BatChmod to make it owned by Root, and group Wheel. 3. Set the file permissions to 644 if not already set. 4. The contents of the file should look like this: newfolder Users/foo/bar "newfolder" is the name of the virtual folder that will be created at the root level of your hard drive. In this case, you would replace "newfolder" with this: Applications (Mac OS 9) "Users/foo/bar" is the actual location of the folder, which includes the actual name of the folder at the end as well. In this case, you would replace "Users/foo/bar" with this: Users/YourAccountNameHere/Applications (Mac OS 9) NOTE: It is important to ensure that the space between the two text strings is a TAB character, and not just a number of spaces. So, in this case, your complete file would look like this: Applications (Mac OS 9) Users/YourAccountNameHere/Applications (Mac OS 9) Of course, "YourAccountNameHere" is your actual account name on your machine. Place the newly-created "synthetic.conf" file in the "etc" directory. Reboot your machine. After rebooting, you should see the new folder at the top level of your hard drive.
